No Flying Carpet- The Impact of Transportation Barriers on Dialysis Patients

This session will examine how public transportation challenges impact dialysis patients in rural communities, particularly in relation to missed and shortened treatments. Attendees will gain an understanding of current research on spatial disparities and transportation access. The session will also present perspectives from dialysis staff on transportation barriers and clinic relationships with transportation providers. In addition, there will be discussion of relevant policy considerations and practical strategies social workers can use to support patients and advocate for improved access.

Haylee Kirschner, LCSW is a facility social worker serving Northeast Pennsylvania with a strong commitment to advancing equity in healthcare access for all. She holds a Bachelor of Social Work from Elizabethtown College and a Master of Social Work from Marywood University. She is a licensed clinical social worker, and a current Doctor of Social Work (DSW) candidate at Kutztown University. Her research centers on access to healthcare, rural poverty, and spatial disparities, with a particular interest in how geography and infrastructure impact service delivery in underserved communities.
