Riding Rollercoasters: The ESRD QIP- Screening and Treating Depression in Dialysis Patients

This session will review the ESRD Program and the current ESRD Quality Incentive Performance (QIP) Measures, with a focus on Depression Screening. In this session, we will explore how to update processes in your dialysis facility to incorporate screening ESRD patients for depression. We will also review how to track and trend depression screening in EQRS, and review in your dialysis facility Quality Assurance and Performance Improvement (QAPI) meetings. Finally, we will review strategies to address Depression affecting patients in your dialysis facility.

David Henner, DO

Berkshire Health Systems

Dr. Henner is a Nephrologist, and the Medical Director and Administrator of Dialysis at Berkshire Medical Center (BMC) in Pittsfield, Massachusetts. He also serves as the Medical Director and Administrator of Dialysis at BMC South County Dialysis Center, BMC North County Dialysis Center, and Southwestern Vermont Medical Center Dialysis Center in Bennington, VT. In addition, Dr. Henner currently serves as the Division Chief of Nephrology at Berkshire Medical Center. He completed his Nephrology Fellowship in 2003 at New York University (NYU). Prior to that, he graduated from Medical School at the Philadelphia College of Osteopathic Medicine (PCOM) in 1998 and completed his Internal Medicine Residency at St. Luke’s Hospital in Bethlehem, PA in 2001.

Dr. Henner currently serves as the ESRD Divisional Board Chair for the IPRO ESRD Network of New England (Network 1), and previously served as Medical Review Board Chair. Dr. Henner also currently serves as the President- Elect of the National Forum of ESRD Networks, and previously served as the Medical Advisory Committee (MAC) Chair for the Forum. He currently resides in Pittsfield, MA with his wife Nadine and 3 children- Alex (17 years old), Maddie and Gabe (13 year old twins). Some of Dr. Henner’s favorite pastimes include baseball, New York Yankees and New York Giants, craft IPAs, fantasy baseball and football, and the Grateful Dead.

Kiana Gates, MSW LICSW NSW-C

Nephrology Social Worker

Southwestern Vermont Medical Center

Kiana Gates is a Licensed Independent Clinical Social Worker in Vermont and Massachusetts and a Certified Nephrology Social Worker (NSW-C) through the National Kidney Foundation. She holds a Master of Science in Social Work from Columbia University in New York City, with a focus on health, mental health, and disabilities. Kiana currently serves as the dialysis social worker at Southwestern Vermont Medical Center, where she provides psychosocial support to individuals with end-stage renal disease. Her work centers on addressing the complex intersections of chronic illness, mental health, and social determinants of health. She collaborates closely with interdisciplinary care teams to support patients through transplant evaluations, treatment transitions, crisis intervention, and long-term care planning. In addition to her medical social work practice, Kiana is a perinatal and trauma-focused therapist in a group private practice, where she specializes in anxiety, trauma recovery, and reproductive mental health. She is trained in EMDR, Interpersonal Psychotherapy (IPT), and polyvagal-informed approaches, integrating evidence-based modalities within a person-centered, culturally responsive framework. Kiana’s professional interests include health equity, patient advocacy, and the development of trauma-informed systems of care. Her work reflects a deep commitment to advancing holistic, ethical, and accessible support for individuals navigating complex medical and psychosocial challenges.
